Blue denim was born in 1873 by Levi Strauss and Jacob David and was originally made for working men due to its high durability. Levi decided to take blue denim and dye it black in early 1900, but it only became popular in 1957 when Elvis Presley wore it in his film Jailhouse Rock.
Without a doubt a pair of jeans are one of the most versatile items one can have. Whether you prefer skinny, straight, flared or any other style, jeans are wardrobe staples. You can style them in so many different ways from day to night and the possibilities are truly endless.
For the autumn/winter season, black jeans or darker shades are ideal. And in spring/summer, the opposite is usually the case, with lighter to medium shades preferred by most.
Things to be aware of when buying a pair of jeans:
It’s important that you get the right fit. Just like bras, denim stretches after a few wears, so make sure that they aren’t baggy in areas like the waist, butt and knees when you buy them. I recommend to my clients to do a squad test while wearing them in the changing rooms to see if they retain their shape. Higher quality denim will always hold its shape and structure better and will last longer too.
Look out for max 2 percent lycra or spandex that will give you enough stretch and comfort. It will hug your body better, creating a more sleek silhouette. Jeans should be snug and hugging the waist but not too tight that they are cutting into you.
Taking body measurements
Remember denim sizing measures in inches and can vary greatly among brands and fabrics.
You will need to know three key measurements which includes:
- Waistband
Usually the narrowest point of your body, but also depending on your preference
whether it’s Mid Rise in line or slightly lower than navel or high rise roughly an inch
above navel. - Inseam
Crotch to ankle. In regular fits, up to 28 inches is considered cropped and anything
29 and above is full length. - Rise
This depends on your preference and suitability of your body shape. - High Rise is anything above 10 inches. Mid Rise is up to 9.5 inches and Low Rise is
anything below 8 inches.
How to care for your jeans:
- Don’t wash them after every wear
- Wash then inside out so they doesn’t fade
- Wash them with similar clothing and colours
- Wash them on a cool cycle and air dry
- Tumble drying is bad for longevity of your jeans
Jeans today:
Most recently, fashion has moved from skinny jeans to more relaxed styles. There are so many different shapes to choose from that it can get confusing if you don’t know what shape suits your body type.
I like high-waisted slim flares and they work very well for me as I am a neat hourglass shape.
Below are some style to choose from:
